The Life Story of The Little Globe Theater

The Little Globe Theater will premiere Rough & Lively, an evening of three one-act plays on Monsday, September 11th at Robert Cole Studios in Washington DC. "Rough & Lively" features local actors Kate Norris and Scot McKenzie as two cosmic adjudicators, a pair of feuding botanists, the devil and a virgin. This will mark the second production launched by Norris and McKenzie, Co-Artistic Directors of The Little Globe Theater.

The three one-act plays that make up "Rough & Lively" are Samuel Beckett's Rough for Theatre II, Lanford Wilson's, A Betrothal, and an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' short story Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? The full theater experience at The Little Globe includes mingling among original sculptures, listening to live music, and enjoying wine and cheese. Once again this season, sculptor Robert Cole has generously provided the venue that allows Norris and McKenzie to carry out their exploration, the Robert Cole Studios.

Last summer, the two actors decided to perform Tennessee Williams' The Two Character Play, founding The Little Globe Theater in the process. Scot McKenzie explains, "It was one of those things that was meant to happen. Kate and I tossed some ideas around about what we wanted to explore on stage. The next thing we knew, we were knee deep in rehearsals and taking reservations." The production premiered in August of 1999 and was visited with critical and popular success.

Though no immediate plans were made, McKenzie and Norris found the entire experience gratifying, and knew they would be interested in collaborating again. After taking a year to tread other boards, The Little Globe is ready to wow again with "Rough & Lively. "

Kate Norris and Scot McKenzie first collaborated as members of the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express during the company's 1997 national tour. When the tour was up, both actors moved to Washington DC and began to immerse themselves in the thriving DC theatre scene. McKenzie has been seen in the critically praised Shakespeare's R & J at The Folger Shakespeare Library as well as the recent Studio Theatre production of Bettyís Summer Vacation. Norris received accolades for her portrayal of Hamlet-Sword in The Folger Shakespeare Library's Hamlet last fall. She also recently finished a successful run with Washington Shakespeare Company as Nina Leeds in Eugene O'Neill's Strange Interlude.

"Rough & Lively" will be performed Monday, September 11 and 18, and Wednesday through Saturday, September 13-17, 20-24 at 8:00pm, and Sunday, September 17 and 24 at 2:00pm. The performances will be held at Robert Cole Studios, 1714 home15th St. Rear, NW, Washington, DC 20009.
